The Boston Six and Their Contemporaries The Boston Six is also known as the Second New England School, a group of six composers (Arthur Foote, Amy Beach, John Knowles Paine, George Chadwich, Edward MacDowell, and Horatio Parker) from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This group and their contemporaries like Scott Joplin and William Grant created a body of art music considered to be the first American music with characteristics independent from European music. Founded in 1897, the General Society of Mayflower Descendants(GSMD) currently counts 30,000+ members. In 2020, the GSMD will host its triennial Congress in Massachusetts with special events occurring in Provincetown, Plymouth, and Boston.
