The Boston Six and Their Contemporaries
The Boston Six is also known as the Second New England School, a group of six composers (Arthur Foote, Amy Beach, John Knowles Paine, George Chadwich, Edward MacDowell, and Horatio Parker) from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. This group and their contemporaries like Scott Joplin and William Grant created a body of art music considered to be the first American music with characteristics independent from European music.
