After The Storm is the first installment of A Town That Worked, a three-part exhibition series exploring the businesses, industries, and people that helped shape modern Provincetown. Opening Thursday, May 22 and running through July 5, After The Storm focuses on the years following the devastating Portland Gale of 1898 and the remarkable rebuilding and reinvention that started to transform Provincetown from a struggling fishing town into the globally known arts and cultural destination it would later become.

Through stories of early hotels, longtime local businesses, Charles Hawthorne and the Cape Cod School of Art, and some of the early people whose work helped define the town’s character, the exhibition examines a pivotal period of change in Provincetown’s history.

The second installment of A Town That Worked — Makers, Workers & Risk-Takers — will open in July 2026 and explore the people, businesses, restaurants, bars, galleries, guest houses, and gathering places that helped define Provincetown from the 1970s forward.
