Dear President Obama,
Please come to Provincetown! I am writing to encourage you to accept the invitation to the 100th Anniversary of the Dedication of the Pilgrim Memorial Monument to be held on August 5th, 2010 at the Monument site in Provincetown.
The Monument memorializes the pilgrims who uprooted their lives and made their first landing in the New World in Provincetown in 1620. The Mayflower pilgrims spent five weeks in Provincetown before moving on to Plymouth, Mass. It was in Provincetown Harbor where they signed the Mayflower Compact to put forth the first self-determining democratic constitution.
Past presidents have visited the Monument as President Theodore Roosevelt laid the cornerstone to launch the construction in 1907. Three years later on August 5, 1910, President William H. Taft arrived to lead the dedication ceremony of the completed Pilgrim Monument.
For all of us in the Cape Cod community, the Monument symbolizes a rich history that we are very proud of. The 100th Anniversary of the Dedication will be a wonderful celebration for the region and we are hopeful that it will bring attention to the importance of the Monument as a beacon to democracy. The democratic principles that were established by the Pilgrims in the Mayflower Compact have shaped our past and will most certainly continue to shape our future.
Thank you for your consideration of the invitation and we hope to see you in Provincetown for the celebration.
Sincerely,
|
